Opportunities to join the Petersen Lab at USC

We are an interdisciplinary research group working at the interface of electrochemistry, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and materials science. We welcome students from civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics, and related fields.

Ph.D. Positions

I am not currently recruiting new Ph.D. students. Please check back for updates as this may change in future admission cycles.

If you are interested in the group’s research and would like to be considered for future openings, you are welcome to reach out to Prof. Petersen at thomasp3@usc.edu with:

  • Your CV
  • 3–5 sentences about what specifically excites you about pursuing a Ph.D. in mechanics of materials, including an example of a problem you are curious about
  • A brief note on how your background connects to the group’s research

Strong candidates will have a foundation in continuum mechanics, thermodynamics, or physical chemistry, and interest in theoretical/computational modeling, experimental work, or both.

M.S. Students

USC Viterbi M.S. students interested in research should contact Prof. Petersen directly.

Undergraduate Researchers

We participate in the USC Center for Undergraduate Research in Viterbi Engineering (CURVE) and Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) programs. USC undergraduates interested in research are encouraged to reach out.
